Founding

The Sol Alliance grew from the government of the Sol system on EarthStation2. It was officially created on 30th March 3303PE and consisted solely of the worlds in the Sol system, replacing the existing government. The aim of the alliance was to form a community of worlds that could aid each other in the event of natural disasters, give financial and material aid to struggling colonies and improve trade links between colonies using new FTL2 equipped transports.

Expansion

Initial interest in the Alliance was fairly low, with it taking a decade for it to expand to a total of ten systems. At this point the the Alliance flag was updated to include the extra stars for the added systems to make the flag more respective of the Alliance rather than simply the Sol system, and gave parity between the number of stars circling with the number of planets.

After this the Alliance set designated entry points at 20 year intervals, during which applications would be considered for worlds wishing to be members. By the start of the Vommel War the Sol Alliance consisted of 53 systems, by the end that number had risen to 78 with another 16 affiliated systems preparing for full entry into the Alliance.

Currently the Sol Alliance consists of 144 worlds with another two applications pending for the next review in 10,010PE.

Controversy

In 3452 Charles Illustus Vommel III rose to power on Vommellia, the lead of the first five worlds colonised in the Second Exodus. The planet itself was colonised by a team lead by Charles Illustus Vommel I and whose family had retained power on the world. Vommel III criticized the expansion of the Sol Alliance with claims that it was the plan of the rulers on EarthStation2 to strip member worlds of their sovereignty and make them subservient to the needs of the colonies in the Sol system. The group of colonies were renamed the Vommel Empire and Vommel III offered worlds to join his Empire under similar terms to the Alliance, yet were guaranteed to retain their sovereignty if it were their desire and that worlds in his Empire would be protected from any aggressive acts on behalf of the Alliance.

The following millennia saw little further expansion of the Sol Alliance, some argue that this was due to Vommel's claims, others that many worlds didn't see the advantage of joining either government. The outbreak of the Vommel War saw many worlds flock to the protection of the Alliance.

Government Type

The Sol Alliance is run as a democratic republic, where each world will be run by their own democratic process if wished, or directly by the Alliance where required. Many smaller worlds along with the Sol system are managed by the Alliance directly. Each world has a representative elected to represent their interests at Alliance Hall on EarthStation3.

The overall head of the Alliance is a president who is elected by the entire populace of the Alliance and is selected from candidates from anywhere in the Alliance. The term of presidency is five years, with a maximum consecutive stay of two terms, though after a term out of office a former president can be re-elected. The president's main task in the public eye is to chair the meetings of representatives in Alliance Hall as well as manage the assignment of tasks within the Alliance.

Flag

The flag of the Sol Alliance consists of a central yellow star on a blue background, surrounded by nine white circles representing the star Sol and its nine planets. Surrounding the planets are a further nine stars, representing the member systems. The flag was designed after the first nine colonies signed up to the Alliance, and there have been calls over the millennia to change the flag to represent the actual number of systems in the Alliance but the cost of replacing all the Alliance branding was always seen as too prohibitive.
